Our story

Discovery OT was founded and is  run by Michaela Gleeson, a Senior Paediatric Occupational Therapist. Our commitment is to support children and families to grow and develop independent skills to do the activities that are meaningful to them. We provide fully individualised and evidence-based assessment and intervention in an understanding, play based and child-centred way.

Play skills

Play skills are a foundational component of your child's development. OT can help them to explore a rich variety of types of play to support their overall development.  We believe that all forms of play of ok and use your child's interests to engage

Fine and Gross motor skill development

Your child benefit from support if you notice that they are:

  • More uncoordinated than peers
  • Having concerns with daily tasks such as dressing, handwriting, using a knife and fork 
  • Needing help to figure out how to do things or get started on a task by themselves
  • Having trouble maintaining a pencil grip, using scissors, drawing or colouring

Sensory processing difficulties

Some children experience the world around them very intensely. Everyday sounds, touch, movement, smells, or busy environments may feel overwhelming, while others may seek out extra sensory input to feel calm and organised. Signs that a child benefit would sensory processing support include:

  • Being over-sensitive to certain noises, textures, tastes or touch
  • Having difficulty paying attention
  • Seeking lots of movement 
  • Becoming overwhelmed in busy environments 
  • Having difficulty regulating their emotions

Routine and Transitions

Some children can find daily routines and transitions challenging. OT can support and give strategies to make things a bit easier

Handwriting

Your child benefit from support if you notice that they are:

  • Finding it challenging to keep up with written work at school
  • Needing extra time to complete written tasks
  • Have concerns about their handwriting speed or quality

Executive functioning support

Organisation, planning and prioritising can impact a child's daily functioning. OT can help provide strategies that work 

A child does not need to have a diagnosis to benefit from Occupational Therapy. You may be at the start of seeking out support for your child or have been suggested to look into OT by another professional. We meet every child and family where they are at and understand their unique strengths, needs and interests.
